An attribute or tuple timestamping in bitemporal relational databases
نویسنده
چکیده
Much of the research on bitemporal databases has focused on the modeling of time-related data with either attribute or tuple timestamping. While the attribute-timestamping approach attaches bitemporal data to attributes, the tuple-timestamping approach splits the object’s history into several tuples. Although there have been numerous studies on bitemporal data models, there is no work contrasting these two common approaches in terms of system performance and ease of use. In this paper, we compared interval-based attributeand tuple-timestamped bitemporal data models by running sample queries to measure processing time, and then we evaluated their usability by using the same data. Our tests indicate that the attribute-timestamping model with one-level nested approach required less time and used less disk space; therefore, it is more appropriate for modeling bitemporal data.

An Algebra for the BiTemporal Nested Data Model
A generalized bitemporal relational data model (BTNM) is formalized for the representation of bitemporal data with nested structure of arbitrary depth. Time is represented by temporal elements. Time-varying attributes are timestamped by taking advantage of the nested feature of the model. Thus, the temporal dimension of the model is expressed by bitemporal nested attributes consisting of atomic...

In this paper we evaluate a model for temporal data utilizing the benefits of object-relational database systems (ORDBS). In particular we show how attribute timestamping can be efficiently implemented in state-of-theart ORDBS. The attribute timestamping concept is based on introducing user-specific types for temporal versions of datatypes. Moreover on the physical level we make use of user-def...

In this article we present a model for temporal data utilizing the benefits of object-relational database systems (ORDBS). In particular we show how attribute timestamping can be used for natural modeling of object attributes on the conceptual level and how this concept can be simply and efficiently implemented in state-of-the-art ORDBS. The attribute timestamping concept is based on introducin...
متن کاملThe TSQL2 Data Model
Adding time to the relational model has been a daunting task [1, 2, 3, 4]. More than two dozen time-extended relational data models have been proposed over the last fifteen years [5]. Most of these are valid-time models. Each fact in a validtime relation has associated the time when it is true in the modeled reality. Other models support transaction-time relations where each fact has associated...
متن کاملExtending Existing Dependency Theory to Temporal Databases
Normal forms play a central role in the design of relational databases. Several normal forms for temporal relational databases have been proposed. These definitions are particular to specific temporal data models, which are numerous and incompatible. This paper attempts to rectify this situation. We define a consistent framework of temporal equivalents of the important conventional database des...
